The smell of hops is in the air. With Grand Rapids landing top honors as “Beer City USA” in 2012, it seems we’re having a bit of a brewery explosion in West Michigan. In September, Perrin Brewing opened their tap room. In November, The Mitten Brewing Co. had their grand opening. And in December, both the Grand Rapids Brewing Company and Rockford Brewing Company are scheduled to open their doors.

Growing up, my dad was a home brewer. Coming home from school on brewing days, I could smell the hops before I even got into the house. Dad stepped into brewing at a local brew pub in my hometown before I turned 21, so once I was able to sample his brews, I had an expert to teach me all about microbrews.

My husband and I both love craft beer, and being from Michigan, are a little biased towards the brews from our state. Last Saturday we stopped into Perrin Brewing, for a delicious lunch and a taste of their porter and their raspberry ale. During The Mitten Brewing Co.’s opening weekend, we stopped in to sample all five of their brews on tap (with their Peanuts & Crackerjack Porter topping my list). Can’t wait for December and two more breweries officially opening. We’re getting really spoiled with the availability of good Michigan craft beer – hooray for living in Grand Rapids. 🙂
