There’s a few weeks after school starts in August where it’s still hot and definitely summer, but my taste buds are really starting to crave fall flavors. Fresh apple recipes like Apple, Bacon, and Goat Cheese Crostini, Apple Orchard Cocktail, and this fresh apple fruit salsa are perfect recipes for those warm fall days.
It's a simple fresh fruit salsa that is the perfect combination of summer and fall, with sweetness from the strawberries, a little bit of crunch from the apples and sweet chips served alongside it.
Made with two of my favorite fruits - summer strawberries and fall apples - fresh apple salsa is my favorite snack for sliding from one season into another.
I love serving this as a side dish at Labor Day barbecues and late summer parties. It's also a great option for bridal showers and baby showers.
This is not a cooked salsa made for canning nor is it a veggie salsa. It’s made with all fresh ingredients and served cold or at room temperature, making it a great alternative to canned salsas.
We’re leaving out the onions, cilantro, and jalapeño found in traditional tomato salsa or my Fresh Mango Peach Salsa to keep this easy fruit salsa recipe sweet, light, and not spicy.
What Apples to Use
Choose apples that are firm, juicy, and sweet. My favorites include:
- Gala
- Jonathan
- Jonagold
- Honey Crisp
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Apples - Pick your favorite sweet apple. Skip the tart Granny Smith apples for this recipe.
- Strawberries - Fresh berries are needed for this recipe. Not frozen - the texture of thawed, frozen berries doesn’t work here.
- Fresh mint - A little goes a long way, but fresh mint brings another delicious layer of flavor to this fruit salsa.
- Fresh orange - You need the juice and zest from the orange, so there’s no reason not to choose fresh fruit here. You’ll just need 1 orange for this recipe.
- Fresh lemon - Fresh lemon juice will taste best, but you can use bottled if that’s all you have on hand. You’ll need a quarter of a fresh lemon for this recipe. Lime juice makes an easy substitute for the lemon, if you prefer.
- Brown sugar - I love how the brown sugar pairs with the apples in this recipe. If you don’t like brown sugar or don’t have any on hand, swap it out for white sugar.
- Salt - Just a little bit of Kosher salt to enhance the sweetness of the fruit.
How to Make Fresh Apple Salsa with Strawberries
Core and finely chop the apples. Place in a large bowl.
Remove the green tops from the strawberries. Finely chop them into small pieces. (About the same size as the apples.) Add to the apples.
Finely dice the mint. Add to the fruit mixture.
Add orange zest, orange juice, and lemon juice to the fruit and mint mixture. Sprinkle the mixture with brown sugar and salt.
Gently toss everything together and mix until well combined.
Serve immediately with homemade cinnamon tortilla chips.
Ways to Enjoy Fresh Apple Salsa
- Scoop it up with cinnamon tortilla chips, graham crackers, or cinnamon pita chips for a quick snack.
- Make it for lunch to top a salad with goat cheese, walnuts, and grilled chicken.
- Serve it on top of a slice of pound cake or angel food cake for an easy dessert.
- Use it to top vanilla ice cream.
Make Homemade Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips
Sweet tortilla chips are quick and easy to make with flour tortillas. You can pop them in the oven, make this apple salsa while the homemade cinnamon chips are baking, and have everything done in less than 30 minutes. Get the recipe on my cinnamon sugar tortilla chips page.
Recipe Tips
- Don’t go overboard on the mint. Actually measure it, and don’t add more than is listed in the recipe. I understand if you like to measure herbs with your heart instead of a tablespoon. (I do too.) But if you overdo it on the mint in this recipe it’ll take over the dish and all you’ll taste is mint. Trust me. Measure.
- You can buy cinnamon sugar pita chips or cinnamon graham crackers at the grocery store, but I can't encourage you enough to make them at home. My cinnamon chips recipe has 4 ingredients and is super easy to make. Give it a try!
FAQs
This sweet salsa is best served the day you make it. The fruit will continue to get soft and the mixture will get more juicy and can lose its texture the longer it sits. If you have any leftover, store it in an airtight container and eat within the 1-2 days.
Use only fresh fruit for this apple salsa recipe. If you can’t find fresh strawberries, substitute fresh blackberries or raspberries.
