Diving Merganser

A female common merganser diving in the Rogue River in search of crayfish. She didn’t seem to mind the icy water at all.

Rockford, Michigan.

Chilly Diving Merganser

Watching this female common merganser dive for food, preen and splash around in the Grand River, you would have never known that it was early February with single digit temperatures.

Riverside Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This pair of hooded mergansers has been hanging out by the dam in Rockford, Michigan for the past couple of weeks. During the hour I spent watching them, these two did nothing but dive for their dinner. The last photo in this series isn’t the best, but I love that you can clearly see the crawfish he pulled up from the bottom of the Rouge River.
