Jump to Recipe Print RecipeA classic Shirley Temple drink is the quintessential mocktail for kids and is super easy to dress up and make spooky for Halloween with these Bloody Shirley Temple Mocktails. Adding in the grenadine with a plastic syringe is a quick way to up the Halloween fun with minimal effort.
The original Shirley Temple recipe was created in the 1930s and is named after child actress Shirley Temple Black (who was supposedly not a fan of the drink). While there are several origin stories around this mocktail, we do know that it was originally made using ginger ale as the soda of choice. The modern version - and my favorite variation - uses lemon-lime soda instead of ginger ale for this sweet sip.
Halloween is the perfect time to take any classic drink and give it a spooky twist, and that's exactly what we've done with this Bloody Shirley Temple! The Shirley Temple gets a frightfully fun makeover with some simple ingredients and a dash of creativity. This mocktail is easy to make, visually striking, and will definitely stand out at any Halloween party!
The base of this non-alcoholic drink is the same as the original: a splash of grenadine, fizzy lemon-lime soda, and a garnish of bright red maraschino cherries. But for a spookier touch, we’ve added a black sugar rim and an optional twist—using a plastic syringe to inject the grenadine for a dramatic, blood-like effect!
Whether you go the traditional route or opt for the syringe method, this drink will be a hit with anyone looking for a fun and festive treat. It’s the perfect creepy Halloween drink for all ages, guaranteed to add a little extra thrill to your party.
What’s in a Bloody Shirley Temple?
- Grenadine Syrup - This non-alcoholic pomegranate syrup is found in the mixer section or liquor aisle of your local grocery store or liquor store. It's bright red color is perfect for creating a spooky drink.
- Lemon lime soda - Choose your favorite brand for this. Sprite, 7-Up, and Starry/Sierra Mist all work great. If you don't like lemon-lime soda, swap it out for ginger ale.
- Maraschino cherries (garnish) - These bright red, sweet cherries are usually used on ice cream sundaes but are also the classic garnish for this Shirley Temple mocktail.
- Black decorating sugar (garnish) - This can be a little tricky to find, but if you have a specialty baking store or your grocery store has special Halloween baking section, check out there. Or you can always grab some from Amazon. The other option is to use other Halloween colors that are more easily available like green, or purple in place of the black on this drink.
How to Make a Bloody Shirley Temple
Prep Your Glass
Pour a small amount of grenadine on a shallow plate. One a second shallow plate, pour some of the decorating sugar.
Dip the rim of a tall, highball glass or collins glass first into the grenadine, then dip it straight into the black decorating sugar.
For a traditional drink
Add grenadine to the glass. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Top with lemon lime soda, pouring slowly over the ice to create layers. Garnish with maraschino cherries. Stir, sip, and enjoy!
For a Halloween syringe drink
Use a plastic syringe to draw up an ounce of grenadine. You can measure it and draw the grenadine from a jigger or eyeball it straight from the bottle of grenadine. Set the syringe aside.
Fill your prepared glass ¾ of the way with ice cubes. Pour lemon lime soda in the glass until it reaches the top of the ice.
Add in the plastic syringe - tip down - pushing the entire syringe down into the glass.
To serve, press the plunger down to dispense the grenadine into the glass.
Garnish with maraschino cherries. Stir, sip, and enjoy!
Make it a Dirty Shirley Cocktail
Add 1.5 ounces of vodka to your tall glass before adding the lemon-lime soda to turn your drink into an adults-only Bloody Dirty Shirley Temple.
Where Do I Get the Syringes for my Bloody Shirley Temples?
I get mine online through Amazon, but you can use any kind of plastic syringe. If you have old ones leftover from your childrens’ medicine, those are likely large enough to work for these drinks.
