The addition of walnut bitters adds an unexpected depth alongside the traditional spice of aromatic bitters. So gather your ingredients, and let’s make a cocktail that’s sure to impress your guests and make any moment feel a little more special!

Ingredients

Ingredients for a Maple Old Fashioned.
  • Bourbon – Choose your favorite bourbon for this recipe. If you’re new to bourbon there’s no need to use a top shelf spirit. Stick with a classic like Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, or Makers Mark.
  • Maple syrup – Use only 100% maple syrup for this recipe. Do not use pancake syrup.
  • Aromatic bitters – Angostura brand is the gold standard for aromatic bitters and my choice for this recipe. Feel free to use a different brand if that’s what you prefer.
  • Walnut bitters – I love the depth that walnut bitters adds, especially with the maple syrup. If you don’t have it, add an additional dash of aromatic bitters.
  • Dried oranges (garnish) – You can buy these at the store or easily make them at home. For instructions on how to make them in your own oven, check out my dehydrated oranges post
  • Maraschino cherries (garnish) – This is optional based on your preferences. Some people love a maraschino cherry in their Old Fashioneds, some don’t. So you do you. If you decide to include one, choose a high quality cherry like Luxardo Maraschino Cherries. Skip the bright red sundae cherries.
