It's this perfect Halloween cocktail recipe for this spooky time of year.
What’s in a Halloween Margarita?
- Tequila - Choose your favorite silver or blanco tequila. You can swap it for mezcal or reposado tequila if you prefer, but be aware that a golden or brown liquor will dramatically change the color of this drink.
- Lime juice - Fresh citrus juice is always best, especially in a margarita! (It's the difference between a good margarita and a great margarita!) You’ll need about 1 lime per drink for this recipe.
- Simple Syrup - Easily made at home (in the microwave!) from sugar and water, simple syrup adds sweetness to this cocktail. Get all the info you need to make it yourself over on my simple syrup recipe page. You can swap out the simple syrup for agave nectar if you prefer.
- Orange Liqueur - Whether you prefer triple sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier, choose your favorite orange liqueur for this margarita recipe.
- Edible Green Glitter - Food grade, edible green glitter is what gives this margarita its unique green color and shimmer that’s oh-so-perfect for Halloween. (Get my fave brand here) If you don’t want to use this or don’t have any on hand, you can leave it out with no impact to the taste.
- Corn Syrup - Basic corn syrup found at your local grocery store is what you need here. Do not swap this for maple syrup - it’s too thin. If you have a strong resistance to corn syrup, you can swap it for honey, but the red color will be off and not look nearly as much like blood.
- Red food coloring - Basic red food dye works here, liquid or gel. Choose your favorite type.
- Dehydrated lime slices - You can find dehydrated citrus in specialty food stores, online, or you can make it yourself at home with your oven. Get detailed instructions over on my homemade oven-dried citrus slices page. Don't want to use dried lime slices? Use fresh lime wedges or lime slices instead.
How to Make a Halloween Margarita
In a shallow dish combine corn syrup and red food coloring. Set aside.
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, combine silver tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, orange liqueur, and green edible glitter. Shake well.
Gently dip the rim of a rocks glass into the corn syrup mixture.
Fill the glass with ice and pour in your cocktail.
Garnish with a dehydrated lime slice or fresh wedge of lime.
Serve, sip and enjoy!
Tips on Creating a Bloody Cocktail Rim
- Traditional corn syrup mixed with red food coloring makes very realistic (and edible) fake blood. Mix in as much food coloring as you want to get the color to your liking.
- Corn syrup is sweet, sticky and runny. Resist the urge to heavily roll the rim of the glass in the syrup. This will only make a mess.
- Dip your glass lightly in the corn syrup mixture and let it sit while you add ice to it. Gravity will do the job of creating the drips down the sides. If you try to put on enough corn syrup to create the drips instantly, you’ll have way too much on the rim.
- If you accidentally get too much on the rim, wipe the drips up - starting from the bottom of the glass - with a paper towel (but don’t touch the syrup on the rim). Let the glass sit and gravity do the work. The drips will re-form, but much more lightly this time.
What Kind of Glass Should I Use for a Halloween Margarita?
This margarita is served on the rocks (a.k.a. over ice), so choose a rocks glass instead of stemmed margarita glasses for serving these drinks.
