Halloween has become one of my favorite holidays, and I love creating themed cocktails and there's no better theme for drinks than Halloween Season.
My goal is always to write delicious recipes that you can easily re-create at home, which is one of the reasons I don't use dry ice in my cocktails. The effect is fabulous, but it can be dangerous if not handled correctly and depending on where you live, it might be tough to get. So we'll add the spooky effects with sugars, citrus, and glassware instead.
This delicious and easy Wicked Witches Brew cocktail gets its purple color from indigo gin and creme de violette, which means all you have to do to make it a Halloween cocktail is add some themed garnishes like black or green decorating sugar and dried lemon slices - and voila! A perfect spooky cocktail.
Yes, this Wicked Witches Brew drink resembles a classic Aviation, but with one big difference. No maraschino liqueur! I enjoy Aviations but didn’t realize how much I don’t love that liqueur until I dropped it for simple syrup in this recipe.
The flavor is cleaner and slightly sweeter, letting the indigo gin and creme de violette shine. Lemon and gin keep the violette from tasting “like soap” (which I always hear about that liqueur), so you don’t need to worry about that in this recipe.
What’s in a Witches Brew Cocktail?
- Indigo Gin - Butterfly pea flower gin does double duty here, giving us a beautiful color as well as lots of floral flavor which pairs perfectly with the creme de violette in this recipe.
- Simple Syrup - Easily made in your microwave from sugar and water, simple syrup should be stirred up in advance so it has time to cool before using.
- Lemon Juice - Fresh juice is always best in cocktail recipes. You’ll need about half of a fresh lemon for this recipe. Don't have lemons on hand? Lime juice is tasty too.
- Creme de Violette - There is no substitute for creme de violette. This sweet, purple liqueur has a strong floral taste so while you need very little for this drink, it’s essential for getting the flavor (and color) right. Look for this at a larger liquor store, like Total Wine.
- Lemon Slices (garnish) - Fresh or dehydrated lemon slices work well for a garnish. I love using dried lemon slices on this cocktail for Halloween to play up the holiday theme. You can make your own dehydrated citrus at home. Just follow the instructions on my oven dried citrus page.
