Skip to RecipeThe Salty Dog is a simple and delicious classic cocktail that combines the bright flavor of fresh grapefruit juice with the smoothness of gin or vodka (your choice!) and a thick rim of coarse salt. It’s a cocktail you don’t often see on bar menus, but is easy to make at your home bar whenever you want!

Originating in the 1950s, this classic cocktail gained popularity for its invigorating taste and simple preparation, making it a favorite among home bartenders. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, enjoying a summer barbecue, or simply unwinding after a long day, the Salty Dog is the perfect make-in-your-glass cocktail that gets you sipping in no time.
The Salty Dog is a spin off from its 1930s cousin, the Greyhound. But it’s the salted rim that sets the Salty Dog apart. The addition of salt enhances the citrus notes in the grapefruit and adds a savory twist to each sip. The contrast between the tart grapefruit juice and the saltiness creates a refreshing balance, making it an excellent choice for anyone who loves grapefruit cocktails.
This is a low ingredient cocktail, so the quality of your ingredients matters. Choose a good gin that you enjoy drinking, squeeze fresh ruby red grapefruit for the juice, and buy coarse kosher salt for the rim. (Now is not the time to use table salt!) The better each of the 3 elements is, the better your cocktail will be!
Ingredients

- Gin (or Vodka) – Choose your favorite gin for this recipe. If you’re new to gin, use Beefeater gin or Aviation gin. Both are tasty gins that don’t have a super strong juniper flavor to them. (My absolute favorite gin is Knickerbocker, a Michigan gin from New Holland Distillery.) You can also use vodka in this recipe in place of the gin. If you go that route, my choice is always Titos for its clean flavor.
- Grapefruit – Ruby red grapefruit are my favorite choice for this cocktail. They taste the sweetest, are super juicy, and will give you the prettiest color juice. Do not buy bottled grapefruit juice. You want to squeeze fresh grapefruit for your cocktail. There are 3 ingredients here. It will take you less than 5 minutes to squeeze a grapefruit. You’ll need 1 grapefruit (or less) per cocktail.
- Coarse salt (for rim) – This is the “salty” part of the cocktail, so don’t skip it! If you’re not up for getting out a dish and doing a full cocktail rim, just add a big pinch of salt into your glass and stir well.
- Simple syrup (optional) – While not an ingredient in the classic Salty Dog recipe, a little simple syrup can often make this drink a bit more palatable, especially if you end up with grapefruits that are on the sour side or you simply prefer sweeter drinks.
Isn’t a Salty Dog just a Greyhound? Almost! A Greyhound cocktail is gin or vodka with fresh grapefruit juice – just like a Salty Dog cocktail. The difference comes in the salted rim. So if you decide to ditch the salted rim in this recipe, you’ll actually be sipping a Greyhound cocktail.

Pro Tip
Create variations on your Salty Dog by experimenting with different gins or salt flavors on the rim. Rosemary salt or a smoked salt are both delicious in place of the plain coarse salt.
Recipe Ideas
- Salty Dog can be made with either gin or vodka. I prefer gin, so I’ve written this recipe for gin. If you have a strong preference for vodka, feel free to use that instead. The amounts are the same, so you can follow this recipe and just swap out the gin for vodka.
- Salty Dogs are not sweet cocktails. The original recipe calls for gin and grapefruit juice plus the salted rim. That’s it. However, for a lot of people that’s too sour. If this is you, there’s no shame in adding in the optional simple syrup (or grapefruit simple syrup) to cut the sour taste. You could also add in 0.25 ounces of elderflower liqueur instead of the simple syrup for a variation on the Salty Dog that’s a little bit sweeter.
- Squeeze your grapefruit juice instead of buying in already bottled! The difference between a good cocktail and a great one is fresh citrus. (No, really!) So take the time to squeeze a fresh grapefruit for this recipe. A Salty Dog will take about 1 grapefruit per cocktail to make.
