Is there anything better than cold watermelon on a hot day? Homemade watermelon juice is a perfect way to enjoy this delicious summer snack with no added sugar or other flavors – just pure, juicy watermelon.

Watermelon Juice

Fresh fruit juice is delicious, but often difficult to make at home unless you happen to own a juicer. But since homemade watermelon juice doesn’t require a juicer, it’s SUPER quick to make in your own kitchen! This easy method only requires a blender, a watermelon, and a strainer.  And since watermelon is mostly liquid, you don’t even waste much of the fruit after you blend it up.

Watermelon is often thought of as good for weight loss because of its high water content. It also contains health benefits like lots of vitamin A, and the amino acid citrulline. Pour some delicious watermelon juice over ice cubes, add a squeeze of lime juice, and garnish with fresh mint for a super refreshing, low calorie sip. It’s perfect on a hot summer day!

What You Need

A blender, watermelon, knife, cutting board, bowl, and strainer sitting on the counter.
  • Fresh watermelon
  • A cutting board big enough to chop up your watermelon.
  • A large, sharp knife to cut up your watermelon.
  • A blender. A large countertop blender is good for big batches of juice. A small bullet-style, high-speed blender is good for smaller amounts.
  • A fine mesh strainer that fits over, and mostly covers, a large bowl.

How to Make Fresh Watermelon Juice

Place your watermelon on the cutting board. Carefully cut it into large sections. Cut each section away from the watermelon rind. Dispose of the rind and cut the watermelon flesh into 2 -3 inch pieces. (These are getting blended up, so don’t worry about them being symmetrical or looking nice!)

Place 3-4 cups of diced watermelon in a blender, cover, and purée until smooth.

Pour the pureed watermelon through the fine mesh sieve into the large bowl. Use a spoon or spatula to move the watermelon pulp around in the sieve, making sure all the juice goes into the bowl.

Dispose of the pulp leftover in the sieve.

Repeat steps 2-4 until you have all the watermelon juice you want!

Pour the watermelon juice from the bowl into a pitcher and chill until ready to use.

Tips

Only use the red fruit. When chopping up your watermelon, only use the parts of the fruit that are red. The white part is part of the watermelon rind. It’s hard, bitter, and should be left out of your juice.

Use natural sugar to sweeten your watermelon juice. If you prefer a sweeter sip, honey or agave syrup are great ways to add sweetness to your drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of watermelon should I use?

A ripe, seedless watermelon works great for this easy method of juicing. If you do find watermelon seeds – black seeds or white seeds – in your fruit, don’t worry. No need to remove them. They’ll blend up with the watermelon and get strained out when you pour your juice through a fine mesh sieve.

How much juice does 1 watermelon make?

One whole watermelon – a personal sized one – will make aprox 64 oz of juice, but you can make as much or as little juice as you want. Feel free to make a small amount – and save yourself some time – by using the precut watermelon chunks found in most grocery stores.

Can I buy watermelon juice at the grocery store?

Yes, but the most popular brand has cherry juice added to it, which significantly alters the taste of the juice. Don’t buy bottled watermelon juice at the store without checking the label and skip anything that isn’t 100% watermelon with no other added fruit juices.

Why is my juice separating? Does that mean it’s gone bad?

Watermelon juice will naturally start separating if not used within a couple hours. If you leave it sit in the refrigerator overnight, it’ll separate into distinct layers with all of the watermelon water at the top and pulp at the bottom. This does NOT impact its taste and does NOT mean it’s gone bad. Simply shake the juice to mix it back together.

How long will watermelon juice keep?

Watermelon juice will last in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.

Ways to Enjoy Watermelon Juice

Watermelon juice is delicious and hydrating when sipped over ice. But it’s also a delicious ingredient in summer cocktails, mocktails, and even homemade popsicles.

  • For Popsicles – Blend together 1 cup of watermelon juice, 6 fresh strawberries and 2 Tbsp of honey. Pour into popsicle molds and freeze until firm. (Optional: Add 4-5 mint leaves and/or ½ tsp lemon zest to the blender.)
  • Make a Mocktail – This watermelon strawberry mocktail is super refreshing for summer.
