Skip to RecipeA bright, citrusy twist on the classic margarita, this Blue Margarita adds homemade blue curaçao syrup to blanco tequila, fresh lime, and orange liqueur for an extra burst of orange flavor. It’s bold in color, refreshing, and perfect warm summer nights and festive gatherings.

With its vibrant blue color and classic margarita flavor, this Blue Margarita is the perfect drink for summer parties, taco nights, poolside sipping, and themed celebrations. It’s the kind of cocktail that looks fancy but is surprisingly simple to make.
Made with silver tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, and blue curaçao syrup, this blue margarita keeps the familiar citrusy balance you expect from a traditional margarita. The blue curaçao syrup adds a bold pop of color without overpowering the drink, while a salted rim brings that perfect salty contrast to every sip.
This recipe includes both a single-serve version and an easy pitcher option, making it ideal whether you’re mixing one drink at home or serving margaritas for a crowd. I’ve also included tips for making your own blue curaçao syrup and ideas for using it in other blue cocktails, so nothing goes to waste once the party’s over.
Ingredients

- Silver tequila – Choose your favorite silver tequila or blanco tequila for this recipe. You don’t need to use the most expensive brand since we’re adding lots of other ingredients along side it.
- Blue curaçao syrup – I prefer using my homemade blue curaçao syrup for my blue margaritas. (See my syrup note below for why!) You can swap this out for blue curaçao liqueur if you prefer.
- Limes – Fresh citrus makes for a great margarita, so take the time to squeeze a fresh lime. Plan on 1 lime per drink.
- Orange liqueur or triple sec – Choose your favorite orange liqueur for this recipe. Cointreau or Grand Marnier work well, as does triple sec if you’re looking for a more budget friendly option.
- Coarse salt (garnish) – I’m a salt-with-my-margarita person, but if you’re not feel free to skip it or swap the salt out for decorating sugar.

Make Your Own Blue Curaçao Syrup
While you can absolutely swap the blue curacao syrup for blue curacao liqueur, I love using the syrup because (1) I know exactly what’s in it and (2) it’s an easy way to keep my liquor consumption in check. I love these margs and using blue curaçao syrup instead of liqueur lets me indulge in a second one when I want to. Get all of the ingredients and instructions over on my blue curaçao syrup recipe page.

Blue Margaritas by the Pitcher (Makes 8)
- 16 oz (2 cups) silver tequila
- 12 oz (1.5 cups) blue curaçao syrup (1 batch of my homemade syrup)
- 8 oz (1 cup) fresh lime juice
- 4 oz (½ cup) orange liqueur or triple sec
- 4 oz (½ cup) filtered water
- Fresh lime slices (garnish)
- Coarse salt (garnish)
Prep the glasses: Run a slice of lime around the rim of 8 rocks glasses. Pour the coarse salt onto a plate. Dip the rims of the glasses in the salt.
Make the margs: In a large pitcher combine tequila, blue curaçao syrup, lime juice, orange liqueur, and water. Stir and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serve the drinks: Fill the glasses with ice. Pour into your prepared glass. Garnish with a lime wedge or lime wheel. Sip and enjoy!

Success Tips for Large Batch Blue Margs
- Do not put ice in your pitcher. It will just melt and water down your blue margaritas. Keep the ice in the glasses.
- The water in this pitcher recipe replaces the need to shake each individual cocktail. If you plan to do that, you can leave it out. Otherwise keep it in and simplify things for yourself.
