Skip to RecipeThe classic Gin Gimlet is appealing in its simplicity and perfect balance of flavors. The crisp, botanical notes of gin blend with the tartness of fresh lime juice and sweetness of simple syrup, to create a refreshing sip that’s refreshing and delicious. It’s a chic cocktail bar drink that’s easily crafted at home.

The Gin Gimlet is a classic cocktail that has been around for over a century with its simple and refreshing profile. The gimlet gained popularity during the 19th century, particularly among British sailors. The combination of gin and lime juice was not only a way to enhance the flavor of their spirits but also served as an effective remedy against scurvy, thanks to the vitamin C in lime. (Who knew?!) This delightful drink has since evolved into a classic cocktail, embodying both elegance and a nod to its nautical roots.
The Gin Gimlet shines in a variety of settings, making it a go-to choice for any occasion. Sip one on a warm summer evening, at a backyard barbecue, or while relaxing at home after a long day. Its refreshing qualities make it an ideal drink for warm weather, yet its elegant presentation lends itself well to formal events and celebrations. No matter the setting, the Gin Gimlet is sure to elevate the moment, inviting you to savor the simplicity and joy of a classic cocktail.
Ingredients

- Gin – I love using a dry gin, like Beefeater, for this recipe. It doesn’t have a strong juniper flavor and balances well with the other two ingredients. If you have a strong preference to a specific gin, use that.
- Simple Syrup – This 2 ingredient syrup is easily made at home and will sweeten your gimlet without getting in the way of the other flavors. If you prefer a really tart drink, drop the amount of syrup in your cocktail down to 1 ounce.
- Lime – Fresh lime juice only for this one! There’s only 3 ingredients in this recipe, so you need to use the freshest ingredients you can, which means squeezing real limes and skipping bottled lime juice. You should need 1 lime (or a little less) per drink.
How to Make a Gin Gimlet

Combine gin, simple syrup, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice.

Shake well for 10-15 seconds. Double strain into a Nick and Nora glass.

Notes

Make Your Own Simple Syrup
Simple syrup is water and white sugar, combined together. That’s it. So it’s easily made at home (in your microwave!) with ingredients you already have on hand. Get my recipe, instructions, and tips over on my simple syrup recipe page.

Gin Gimlet Variations
Since a gin gimlet is only 3 ingredients, it’s easy to swap them around to make variations on this simple cocktail. Try one of these ideas:
- Trade out the gin for a flavored gin (Empress Gin is really tasty in this recipe!) or a more juniper forward gin for a completely different flavor.
- Use strawberry syrup instead of simple syrup for a Strawberry Gimlet.
- Make some rosemary syrup to use in place of the simple syrup for a Rosemary Gimlet.
- Shake up a Lavender Gimlet by using lavender syrup instead of the simple syrup.
