This easy chocolate cream cheese banana bread recipe - with its swirls of sweetened cream cheese - is the perfect excuse to have chocolate for breakfast.
When you have a family of banana bread lovers, you've got to change it up once in a while. I love anything with a cream cheese swirl, so it wasn't a big jump to add a sweet cream cheese element - and a little chocolate - into my favorite banana bread recipe.
Ingredients
- Flour
- Sugar
- Cocoa powder
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Eggs
- Very ripe bananas
- Oil
- Vanilla
- Cream cheese
- Brown sugar
How to Make Chocolate Cream Cheese Banana Bread
Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine cream cheese, 1 egg, ½ cup flour, and brown sugar in a small bowl. The batter will be thin. Set aside.
In a large bowl, combine 1 egg, mashed bananas, oil and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
Pour batter into a well-greased loaf pan. The batter will be very thick.
Spoon cream cheese mixture on top of the batter.
Using a butter knife or small spatula, make a few big swirls in the bread to combine the cream cheese mixture with the batter. Don’t over swirl or the cream cheese will disappear into the batter.
Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Allow bread to cool to room temperature before slicing.

Tips on Chocolate Cream Cheese Banana Bread
- The riper the bananas, the sweeter the bread will be. You want your bananas to be soft and have brown spots on the peels in order to get the sweetest flavor in your banana bread.
- Swirl the cream cheese mixture into the bread carefully, being sure not to overmix. The more you swirl, the more the cream cheese mixture will start blending into your chocolate banana bread. It will still be delicious, but won't have the pockets of cream cheese in it that you're looking for.

FAQs and Substitutions
Both regular and low fat cream cheese work well in this recipe. I have not tested it with fat free cream cheese or non dairy cream cheeses. If you do, let me know how it went in the comments!
This chocolate cream cheese banana bread freezes great! You can slice it before freezing or freeze the full loaf. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then again in aluminum foil or place it in the freezer bag. Thaw the banana bread overnight in the refrigerator before unwrapping and enjoying.
