Full of fresh berry flavor this Strawberry Moscow mule recipe is a delicious and easy summer cocktail. Made with vodka, ginger beer, fresh lime, and homemade strawberry syrup, it’s a fruity spin on the classic Moscow mule recipe and perfect for enjoying during strawberry season.

Strawberry Moscow Mules

Strawberry simple syrup is a fruity addition to the classic Moscow Mule cocktail and lets you rely on a quick homemade syrup instead of having fresh fruit available. It also means that if fresh berries are out of season or unavailable, you’re not out of ingredients for this delicious drink.

You can use frozen strawberries to make the simple syrup, which means this is no longer just a summer cocktail. While it is perfect for a hot sunny day, using strawberry syrup means you can make it any time of year.

Moscow mule recipes are especially easy cocktails to make, because they skip the cocktail shaker. Add your vodka, strawberry simple syrup, and fresh lime juice directly to your copper mug with ice before pouring over your ginger beer.

Ingredients

Ingredients for a strawberry moscow mule.
  • Vodka – Choose your favorite plain vodka for this recipe.
  • Strawberry Simple Syrup – You can use store bought strawberry syrup, but I highly recommend making your own from fresh or frozen strawberries. It only takes 10 minutes! Get the recipe over on my Strawberry Simple Syrup page.
  • Fresh Lime – There’s only 4 ingredients in this cocktail, so don’t skip the fresh lime juice. The difference between a good cocktail and a great cocktail is the fresh juice. You’ll need about half a lime per drink.
  • Ginger Beer – Choose your favorite brand for this recipe. Like it’s root beer cousin, ginger beer is a soda that has zero alcohol in it. Ginger beer has a stronger ginger flavor than traditional ginger ale. Look for ginger beer in the cocktail mixer section of your grocery store. It is often displayed separately from the other soft drinks. Goslings makes my favorite brand of ginger beer, but if you’re looking for less of a ginger punch, try Fever Tree ginger beer.

Recipe Tips

Use real lime juice. They’re very few ingredients in a strawberry Moscow mule cocktail, so using real juice will make a difference in the flavor. You should need about half a lime per cocktail.

Give your syrup time to chill. After you make your strawberry syrup, be sure to put it in the refrigerator for a few hours before you need to use it. Using warm syrup in a drink will melt ice faster than you want and put more water in your cocktail than is needed.

Chill your ginger beer ahead of time. While not absolutely necessary, having cold ginger beer ready for this cocktail will help your ice melt slower and keep your drink colder for longer.

How to Make Strawberry Simple Syrup

Homemade strawberry simple syrup uses only three ingredients and takes about 10 minutes to make. It keeps in the refrigerator for a couple weeks, so you can make it well in advance and have it on hand when you’re ready to make your strawberry Moscow mules.

Why is a Moscow Mule Served in a Copper Cup?

The copper mug has become part of the experience of a Moscow Mule. The copper keeps the drink colder longer and the vodka in the drink coming in contact with the copper on the side of the mug supposedly improved the tastes of the vodka. (And there’s also evidence that says they were a marketing gimmick from a vodka brand that stuck around.)

Moscow Mule purists will disagree, but you can absolutely put a Moscow Mule in a non-copper glass. If you’re new to Moscow Mules or don’t have room to store glasses you only use once in a while, grab a large rocks glass or even a highball glass for serving your mule.

Make it a Fresh Strawberry Mule

If you don’t have any strawberry syrup on hand, you can muddle fresh strawberries in your glass before making the drink to use the sweetness of the strawberries. If you prefer a sweeter but non-strawberry cocktail, you can use traditional simple syrup, honey syrup, or another fruit flavored syrup in place of the strawberry simple syrup in this recipe.
