A glass of citrus tequila smash cocktail.

A tequila smash is a variation of the classic smash cocktails – a style of drink that typically combines a spirit, fresh herbs (often mint), a citrus element, and seasonal fruit. In this version, tequila takes the spotlight, bringing earthy notes that pair beautifully with fresh lime juice, herbs, and fruit. It’s a laid-back cocktail that’s easy to adjust to your taste and ideal for using whatever fresh ingredients you have on hand.

The magic in the tequila smash lies in its simplicity, with ingredients that are easily found at your local grocery store and no expensive bar tools. Just muddle some mint, citrus, and fruit (berries and citrus work great!), stir in tequila and top it with ice and soda and you’ve got a drink that’s both delicious and super refreshing.

Ingredients

Ingredients for a tequila smash cocktail.
  • Tequila – For a tequila smash, there’s no need for premium tequila. Choose your favorite blanco tequila. Its clean, bright flavor that compliments fresh ingredients. If you prefer a slightly richer, oakier profile, reposado tequila works well too.
  • Lime – Fresh limes are the only way to go here, so skip the bottled juice. You’ll need about half a fresh lime for each cocktail, plus some lime wedges for garnish.
  • Simple syrup – Easily made with sugar and water, stir together your simple syrup ahead of cocktail hour so it has time to cool before you make your cocktails. Get my syrup recipe and instructions on my simple syrup recipe page. Want to swap out the simple syrup? Use agave syrup instead.
  • Fresh mint – You’ll need fresh mint for both the cocktail and its garnish, so don’t skimp on this ingredient. Do not use dried mint.
  • Fresh fruit – Whatever you choose for this ingredient will determine the main flavor of your drink. Choose from fresh blackberries, strawberries, or raspberries, or go all in on citrus with slices of oranges or grapefruit.
  • Club soda – This gives your cocktail a delicious fizzy element. Swap it out for sparkling water or mineral water if you prefer.

Make Your Own Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is sugar and water and is way too easy to make at home for you to be buying it at the store! Get my microwave instructions and syrup tips over on my simple syrup recipe page.

Easy Ways to Customize Your Tequila Smash

Creating your perfect drink is easy with a Tequila Smash Cocktail and part of what makes smash drinks so fun.

  • Change the fruit: Try peaches, pineapple, watermelon, or even cucumber for a refreshing twist.
  • Herb swaps: Basil leaves, cilantro, or thyme can be great alternatives to mint.
  • Add spice: Muddle in a slice of jalapeño or add a Tajín rim for a spicy-salty kick.
  • Use a different sweetener: Choose honey syrup or mint syrup instead of the classic simple syrup.
  • Swap out bubbly: Add a splash of flavored sparkling water or tonic to change things up.
