The perfect drink for a hot summer night, this Peach Old Fashioned cocktail is an ideal summer nightcap and a delicious recipe to serve to your favorite bourbon drinker.

Glasses of peach old fashioned cocktail.

I love a good seasonal drink and this one is great during peach season. Use fresh peaches to garnish your drink as well as to make a delicious homemade simple syrup to use in this peach old fashioned (along with lots of other drinks).

The peachy flavor in this drink comes from homemade peach syrup, not peach liqueur, giving it the flavor of fresh peaches mixed into smooth bourbon. Like a traditional old fashioned though, it still allows the flavor of the bourbon to shine through.

This peach bourbon cocktail is a summer riff on an old fashioned classic cocktail, not a smash cocktail full of fresh peaches and ginger beer. (Check out my friend Meredith’s recipe for a bourbon peach smash if that’s what you’re looking for.)

What’s in a Peach Old Fashioned

Ingredients for a Peach Old Fashioned - bourbon, peach syrup, peaches, lemon, peach bitters.
  • Bourbon – Pick your favorite, but stay away from the rye variations for this recipe. Put the peach flavor over the top by using homemade peach infused bourbon.
  • Peach Simple Syrup – Homemade or store bought, you’re looking for sweet peach flavor.
  • Peach Bitters – This may be a new ingredient for you, but one worth picking up. Peach bitters add so much to this drink. (Read: Elevate Your Cocktails with Bitters) Can’t find peach bitters? Use Angostura aromatic bitters instead. It’ll add more warm spice flavor than the peach bitters, but will still be delicious.
  • Fresh lemon – Fresh lemon only! You need the peel in this drink, so there’s no substituting this ingredient.
  • Fresh peach – Fresh peach garnish is ideal for this cocktail.

Recipe Tips

  • Garnish this cocktail with a slice or two of fresh peaches for a delicious summer addition.
  • No need to add fresh lemon juice for tartness to your peach old fashioned. The peach bitters take care of that.
  • Making your own simple syrup is quick and easy. Don’t skip this step and buy something bottled at the store. Homemade peach syrup is so much better!
  • Don’t have a mixing glass? Use the main body of a cocktail shaker or a wide-mouth pint mason jar instead.

What Bourbon Should I Use?

Use your favorite bourbon! For drinks like this where the bourbon is the main ingredient, I like to use a high quality bourbon like Four Roses Single Barrel. Maker’s Mark or Woodford Reserve would also be delicious in this drink. If you really want to up the peach flavor, you can swap out the bourbon for a peach whiskey like Crown Peach. If you go this route, reduce the amount of peach syrup in your drink by half.

Make Your Own Peach Syrup

Peach simple syrup is delicious and easy to make at home with fresh or frozen peaches. It takes less than 10 minutes and lasts in the refrigerator for weeks. Get all the instructions over at my Homemade Peach Syrup recipe page. Put a twist on this syrup by using brown sugar instead white sugar in the recipe.
